Which is the Hydrogen Motor and How does it work?

Toyota Mirai FCV

Running a car on a fuel other than petrol, diesel, CNG, and LPG sounds weird. Isn’t it? The Toyota Mirai runs on Hydrogen and the only by-product is oxygen. Now the question is, how does the Mirai produce electricity? The Mirai has three hydrogen tanks at the bottom, one is vertically and two are horizontal.

The Hydrogen from the fuel and the air containing oxygen meet at the Fuel Cell Stack. Then there is a chemical reaction happens involving the hydrogen with oxygen to create electricity, which powers the Mirai FCV.

The electric motor with a Polymer electrolyte fuel cell with a total of 330 cells produces 128 kW of power. The Lithium-ion battery with 310.8 V of output has a 1.24 kWh battery has an overall weight of 44.6 kgs.

In terms of performance, the Mirai Electric motor has a maximum power output of 182 bhp and 406 Nm of peak torque. There is no need for any transmission in electric-powered vehicles. So you just have to press the accelerator and it goes to the sky in seconds.

The power is transmitted from the motor to the rear wheels with three different modes, Eco, Normal, and Sports. The car does a 0-60mph/0-100kmph run from a standstill in under 10 seconds, that is fast indeed. Whereas, the full tank of 5 liters of hydrogen can take the Mirai to 402 Miles/646 km.

How do I Fill Up Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Tank?

There is nothing different about filling hydrogen in the Mirai tanks. It’s as easy as filling the gasoline, there are hydrogen fuel stations and you just have to keep the nozzle and fit it into the tank filling outlet. It just needs five minutes to refill the full tank and you can resume your journey.

How Safe Is the Hydrogen?

The tanks on the Mirai are tested rigorously and proven to meet Global Technical Regulation No. 13. The Tanks are multi-patented, carbon-fiber-wrapped, polymer-lined fuel tanks that absorb five times the crash energy of steel. The sensors inside the tanks are designed to stop the flow of hydrogen and if in any case the hydrogen leaks, it escapes safely back into the atmosphere.

What is the Global Technical Regulation No. 13?
